UXBRIDGE — While a six-year-old Uxbridge boy accidentally run over by a lawn mower continues to recover in hospital, the town he calls home is making plans to help in his recovery.
Cooper Lotton was injured last Sunday, when a riding lawn mower reversed over his foot. He was airlifted to SickKids hospital in Toronto with serious but stable injuries where he has remained following two surgeries.
At last check Cooper was doing well and even smiling at visitors, while the family hopes that he will be released later this week, said Cathy Israelstam, a friend of the family.
After hearing the news of the accident, Ms. Israelstam and her husband Shaun, along with the Gorgons — a local community group dedicated to raising money to help Uxbridge families in need — got to work setting up a series of fundraisers to assist the Lotton family in Cooper’s recovery.
Ms. Israelstam’s son is a friend of Cooper’s and she said it’s not uncommon to see the little boy at the arena, soccer field or baseball diamonds playing sports.
“Cooper is just an energetic and vivacious little boy who has been involved in all these sports,” she said. “It’s going to be a long road to recovery for him and his family both physically and emotionally.
“Uxbridge has always been defined by the support we give each other through good times and bad, so hopefully we can do what we can to make this journey a little less stressful for the Lotton family.”
There will be a poker tournament fundraiser at 7 p.m. on July 8 at the Uxbridge Seniors Centre, 75 Marietta St., Uxbridge.
Chris Smith of Gorgons said there will be a raffle, prizes, cash bar and snacks and that everyone is welcome to attend.
“Even if you don’t play poker you are welcome to come out and support the cause,” he said.
Donations can be made directly at Jerseys Restaurant, 104 Brock St. W., Uxbridge, or to the Gorgons account at TD Bank, account number 5205310.
Tickets for the fundraiser at the Seniors’ Centre are available at Jerseys Restaurant or by calling Mr. Smith at 416-807-3333.
