The Brooklin Redmen are now at the halfway mark of the 2011 season and are in first overall with a record of 8-2 after a hard fought 10-7 win tonight over the Brampton Excelsiors (6-4). The game also featured a milestone for Shawn Williams who notched his 700th assist against the team he was on for the past two seasons. The assist came with 1:06 left in the second as Derek Hopcroft scored to tie the game at 4-4 with twenty minutes left.
Scott Campbell scored early with just eight seconds off the clock as Matt Holman won the opening face-off. The Redmen opened the lead to 2-0 before the visitors decided enough was enough and rattled off three straight for the 3-2 lead after the first 20 minutes.
The Redmen won a defensive second period 2-1 and the teams were tied at 4-4 after two periods. The Excelsiors scored first in the second with just 0:29 off the clock but the Redmen kept the Brampton offense on the outside for the rest of the night. Referees Scott McCullouch and Mark Gardonio called a balanced game with five minors to the home side and two to the Excelsiors. Brampton had one goal on the man advantage. Aaron Bold and Anthony Cosmo displayed their goaltending skills all night.
The third period was all offense, the teams scored eight goals in total over the first two periods and the Redmen won the third frame by a 6-3 margin. The Redmen scored first and Brampton evened it at the three-minute mark. Just seven seconds later the Redmen scored again and opened a two goal lead just two minutes later. The reality of answering an opposing team’s goals quickly to snuff out momentum is the sign of a confident team and the Redmen are learning that. Three goals from Kyle Buchanan including a beautiful play where he swept past a Brampton defender and forced Cosmo to guess wrong. It was a natural hattrick in the making spoiled by a Joe Walters goal but the Redmen responded and took the hard fought 10-7 win good for a record of 8-2.
A well deserved rest for the Redmen as they have practice on Monday followed by a home game a week tonight at 8 pm vs the KW Kodiaks.
