The Whitby Junior C Warriors opened up their 2011 Season with a convincing 12-1 win over the Huntsville Hawks at Jack Bionda Arena last night. The Warriors held leads of 6-0 after one period, and 11-0 after two periods, on route to the final. They were running on a short bench only dressing 14 runners and two goalies, with many still in school or working.
Cody Simpson and Jason Heickert led the way offensively with 3G, 4A, and 2G, 5A respectively. Affiliated player Rylee McKinnon scored twice, adding 2 assists, while Shane Takahashi scored once and added 4 helpers. Single goals went to Paul Gilligan, Colin Amodeo, Matt Hurren and Nathaniel Kerstens. The Warriors defense was stellar in the win, and goalie Kyle Ford made key saves throughout the game to keep the momentum up. Ford’s chances at a shutout were erased with only 2 minutes left in the game when the Hawks Tanner Swift got a screen shot passed him.
The game was relatively calm with Huntsville totalling 20 minutes on 10 penalties while the Warriors took 10 minutes on 5 penalties.
Whitby will open up their Home Schedule next Friday night, May 13th when the Innisil Wolfpack come to town. Game time is 8pm at Iroquois Park Arena. Tickets are only $5 at the door, or a Season pass for all 8 Regular Season Home Games can be purchased for $30.
