Scotiabank Saddledome – Home Sweet Dome. It’s been seven weeks since the Calgary Roughnecks played at home. They hosted the same Edmonton Rush back in January, defeating them 12-11 in overtime.

Since then, the Riggers completed a successful road trip, going 3-1 (1st in the West, now 8-3) and clinched a playoff berth for the ninth consecutive season. Edmonton sits 4th in the West with a 2-9 record.

Tonight’s affair consisted of a series of momentum shifts. Calgary came out strong, and were already ahead 4-0 by the 2:40 mark of the first. On the play, Dane Dobbie received a high check on the crease from Edmonton’s John Lintz. With Dobbie crumpling to the floor, the ball still found it’s way over the shoulder of Matt Disher into the back of the net. Disher was chased from the game, allowing 4 goals on 5 shots, and replaced by newly acquired Rob Blasdell.

The change in net settled the Rush and they began to build a comeback. Edmonton went on to score eight straight, thanks, in part, to an extended powerplay. Calgary’s Geoff Snider received a 5 minute major for cross-checking at 7:34 in the first quarter, a penalty taken during play stoppage while another minor was being assessed. Calgary managed to finish the half leading 9-8.

Edmonton outscored Calgary in the third quarter, 3-1. The Roughnecks showed good ball control, but were unable to get quality shots on goal. They also had the crowd cheering with some hard-hitting defensive work.

After exchanging markers in the final quarter and the score tied at 12, the Roughnecks poured on the pressure with little reply from the Rush. Calgary outscored the visitors 9-3 with dominant play and good time management. Final score 19-14 Calgary.

The Roughnecks host the Toronto Rock next Friday, while the Rush entertain the Minnesota Swarm.
