Redmen Shake a Monkey off Their Backs En Route to Win and Series Lead

July 25, 2010
Whitby, ON

The Redmen did something tonight that has eluded them thus far in the 2010 season and that was to win a game on home floor. The Kodiaks were in town for game two of the best of seven series that the Redmen lead 1-0 by virtue of a 9-7 win at KW on Friday night.

The Redmen decided to set the tone in the game and rookie Kevin Brownell found the back of the net behind KW goalie Mike Poulin with just 1:30 off the clock. Brownell would go on to score two more in that opening frame to help his team post a 5-0 lead after the first period. Another first year Redmen, Coady Adamson scored on a great behind the back shot to make it 5-0.

The Kodiaks solved Kurtis Wagar in the Redmen net for the first time with 3:20 off the clock. The Redmen countered that goal just 15 seconds later and the teams traded goals later for the 7-2 Redmen lead after forty minutes and a win on home floor was looking more and more like a possibility.

The Kodiaks on the other hand had a different plan and proceeded to score four unanswered goals that frame, two on the power play, to claw back and make it 7-6 with 3:44 remaining on the clock. Wagar and the Redmen were able to hold off the charging Kodiaks who did have a timeout and Poulin on the bench with their final possession with 0:27 on the clock to no avail.

The win gives the Redmen a 2-0 series lead as the teams shift back to KW on Tuesday at 8 pm for game three and game four is back at IPSC on Thursday at 8 pm.

Wayne Paddick and Jon Watson assessed eight minors to the Redmen and the Kodiaks scored three times and the Kodiaks had six minors and the Redmen converted one of those for a goal.
“Starr Burger” Player of the Game was Redmen goalie # 1 Kurtis Wagar.
