Solid Effort Not Enough in Loss to Peterborough Lakers

June 28, 2010
Whitby, ON

With Kurtis Wagar and Joel Weber both on the injury shelf, Wayne Colley was forced to call in Zac Higgins from the Junior A Whitby Warriors; appearing in the back-up role was Senior B Brooklin Merchant keeper John Cheeseborough.

Higgins had a cheering section as his Warrior teammates who were practicing in an adjacent pad at IPSC wandered over to watch their netminder. A number of Clarington Green Gaels were also on hand as their coach and former Redmen, Jason Crosbie suited up for the Lakers. The game was in jeopardy of being delayed, as Lakers officials were not happy with the damp condition of the floor. With over an hour to go before the opening whistle, staff at Iroquois Park were able to solve the problem.

Jason Wiswell and Bill Fox called the game with eight minors to the Redmen and five the Lakers, Brooklin scored twice on the extra man as did the Lakers.

The teams were tied at 1-1 after the opening frame. The Lakers opened the lead to 5-1 with four unanswered goals in the first ten minutes of the second period. Dan Ball and Rick Acorn answered for the Redmen to close out the middle frame and it was 5-3 for the Lakers. Higgins played very well to give the Redmen a chance to come back and perhaps steal a win from the league leading Lakers.

The Lakers scored the first two goals of the last period to regain their gap of four goals before two goals by the Redmen in a 13 second span to get them back to the same point. The teams traded goals the rest of the night but the Lakers had far too many offensive weapons in the line-up with the likes of Mark Steenhuis, John Tavares, Scott and Shawn Evans and recently signed Tracy Kelusky. Final score was 10-7 for the Lakers to drop the Redmen to 2-7-1 and improve the Lakers record to 10-1.

“Starr Burger Player of the Game” for the Redmen: Zac Higgins who gave the Redmen a chance to win with his stellar performance.

Next up for the Redmen a home game on Wednesday June 30, 2010 at 8 pm when they host the KW Kodiaks.
