With only four regular season games left to play, and sitting in first place, the Victoria Shamrocks, who were wearing their ‘away’ jerseys tonight, took on the Langley Thunder, (now 3-6). The teams played at Bear Mountain Arena in Victoria. This win has brought the Shamrocks to 8-3. There wasn’t the usual full house, but that didn’t stop the hundreds of fans that were there, from showing their enthusiasm. The crowd was loud, as both teams came out blazing, and with ‘winning’ on their minds.

They played a very fast first period, with the first goal on the boards in favor of the Thunder, at 31 seconds by Stephan Leblanc, quickly answered back by Jeff Shattler, tossing one in for the Shamrocks at 3:56. I was surprised to see a couple of friends of mine on the Langley team, Nick Graham, and Lance Griffiths.. a couple of call-ups from the Junior B Westshore Bears. It was nice to see them out there as Seniors. Many Junior players belong on Senior teams and this gives them the chance to be seen.

Then the goals just kept on coming for the Shamrocks, getting a total of six, to finish the first period. Kory Kowalyk, a Junior Shamrock from last season, scored two in a row at 4:51 and 7:14, followed by Jeff Shattler’s second of the night, at 10:22, and then one by Dean Hill at 11:33.

The sixth goal for the Shamrocks, came in with 8:27 left in the first period, at 12:32, shortly after the Thunder pulled goaltender, Joe Bell, from between the pipes, replacing him with Kevin Croswell. The Thunder’s, Stephan Leblanc, got his second of the night, at 14:07, on the power play, with Jeff Shattler in the penalty box. Dean Hill got his second, at 15:02, also on the power play, making it 7-2 for the Shamrocks. Langley’s Joel McCreedy came back with an answer for Langley, getting their third goal at 15:52.

The action continued as Jeff Shattler gets his hat trick, at 18:41, the eight goal of the night for the Shamrocks. Langley’s, Alex Turner, quickly changed that by sending one past Nick Patterson, scoring the fourth goal for the Thunder at 19:57, on the power play. By the end of the first period, shots on goal are even, at 16, with a total score so far sitting at 8-4, in favor of the Rocks.

Just 59 seconds into the second period, Victoria Shamrocks’, Kory Kowalyk, gets his hat trick, and the ninth goal for the team. The action continues, as the Thunder’s, Mike Grimes, puts the score at 9-5, shooting one into the back of the net against Patterson, at 5:36. With Kevin Croswell still in net, the Shamrocks’, Mike Pires, who was also a Junior Shamrock last season, gets the Rocks their tenth goal of the night, at 9:29.

Joel McCready gets his second of the night by plotting one in behind Patterson at 11:02, making the score so far, 10-6, as the Victoria Shamrocks call a time out with only 20 seconds left on the clock. By the end of the second period, shots on goal are in favor of Langley, at 16, and with 12 for the Shamrocks, making a total of 32 for Langley and 28 for Victoria.

Into the third period, Jeff Shattler scores his fourth of the night, giving the Shamrocks their eleventh goal, at 11 seconds, followed shortly after, at 21 seconds, by Joe Vetere, giving Langley their seventh of the night. Shamrocks twelfth goal came from Dean Hill, his second on the board, at 2:43.

Alex Turner gets his second, at 7:46, bringing the score to 11-8. The Shamrocks’, Matt Lyons and Dean Hill, each shoot one in at 9:59 and 11:39. The last two goals of the night, came from the Langley Thunder, as Kyle McEwen and Kyle Belton, each get one past Patterson, at 18:13, and 19:05, bringing the final score to 14-10 for the Shamrocks.

Total shots on net; 46 for Langley, and 40 for Victoria.
