Redmen Victimized By The AP Rock

June 21, 2010
Whitby, ON

The Brooklin Redmen had two victories on the season going in to this evening’s contest; both came against cross-town rivals the Ajax Pickering Rock. At the end of tonight the Redmen still only have two wins but now the Rock have earned their first points of the season with a 10-7 win at Iroquois Park Sports Centre.

The Redmen were coming off an 8-8 tie the other night against the Kodiaks when they were down 7-3 in the third but found a way to battle back, the coaching duo of Wayne Colley and Ian Wailes were hoping to feed off the effort from that game.

Tyler Carlson and Kurtis Wagar were in net for their teams. Both keepers made some good saves until 15:14 of the second when Wagar left the game with an apparent lower body injury and he was replaced with Joel Weber who went the distance. Scott Campbell left the game as well as a ball struck him and bent his facemask.

The teams were tied at 3-3 after the opening period, the Rock scored twice on three power play opportunities that frame and the Redmen scored shorthanded on one of those.

Goals were traded in the middle frame but Bryan Johnson’s marker with 40 seconds left on the clock gave the Rock a boost that the Redmen could not match. The Redmen were held off the scoreboard in the last period as the Rock scored two more for the 10-7 win to improve to 1-6 with the Redmen dropping to 2-5-1 now at the mid-point of the shortened 16 game schedule.

Referees Steve Line and Bill Fox called only five minors in total, three to the Redmen and two to Ajax. The Rock scored twice on the power play and the Redmen once short-handed.
Next up for the Redmen a trip Thursday night to the Powerade Centre for an 8:00 pm game against the Brampton Excelsiors before they host the Peterborough Lakers on Monday June 28, 2010 at IPSC at 8:00 pm.

“Starr Burger Player of the Game” for the Redmen: Derek Hopcroft with two goals and one assist.
