Redmen Celebrate Minor Lacrosse But Excelsiors Spoil the Party

June 11, 2010
Whitby, ON

The Brooklin Redmen hosted the two time defending Mann Cup champs, Brampton Excelsiors on their annual Scott McMichael Minor Lacrosse Night. The stands were full of minor league players on hand to learn from their idols. The Brampton trio of Shawn Williams, Josh Sanderson and Dan Dawson was too much on this night as they factored for 12 of Brampton’s 18 goals in an 18-10 win. The loss drops the Redmen to 2-3 on the season and Brampton improves to 5-3 with half of their 16 game season in the books.

The Excelsiors struck first on this night as Dawson scored with just 27 seconds off the clock and they never looked back. They added another before Scott Campbell got his first of three on the night and it was 5-2 after the first period.

The teams scored a combined 12 goals in the middle frame but more often than not Brampton would answer every time the Redmen found the back of the net. The visitors outscored the Redmen 8-4 in the second for a 13-6 lead after forty minutes. The Redmen had some success with a shorthanded marker as well as a power play goal in that period.

The last period was much closer even though Sanderson scored just 22 seconds in to the final frame. The Redmen didn’t quit and were able to score four times en route to the 18-10 loss.

A big thank you to the staff at the Town of Whitby who worked hard to ensure that the arena was ready for tonight after renovations to the roof were completed this week.

Referees Paddick and Caplice called a solid game as the Redmen were assessed 12 minutes in penalties and the Excelsiors were given four minors. The Redmen scored twice on the power play and once short handed while the Excelsiors scored five on the power play on six chances with two shorthanded.

The Redmen will have to regroup as they take on the Kitchener Waterloo Kodiaks in Waterloo on Tuesday night before they host the Kodiaks next Friday June 18, 2010 at 8 pm at Iroquois Park Sports Centre.
