(Orlando, January 29)… The Rochester Knighthawks dropped their second straight East Division game as they lost 13-8 to the Orlando Titans tonight at the Amway Arena. The Titans fought off a late Rochester comeback bid with three goals in 23 seconds in the fourth to break open a three-goal game.
The loss was the second straight for Rochester (2-2) and it fell to .500. The Titans improved to 2-1 and 2-0 at home with the victory in front of 7,367 fans.
John Grant Jr. led Rochester with five points (2+3), while Craig Point scored four goals. The two were key contributors to the Knighthawks’ second-half rally that knocked a 7-2 halftime deficit down to 7-4 and then 8-5. Shawnn Evans also chipped in with one goal and three assists.
The Titans were led by a seven-point effort from Ryan Boyle (2+5) and a six-point performance from Pat Maddalena (1+5). Casey Powell also had three goals and two assists and Game MVP Jordan Hall collected four goals and one assist. Matt Vinc earned the win in goal.
Orlando got on the board first as Powell raced around the defense and beat Pat O’Toole at 1:27 for a 1-0 lead. Point responded for the Knighthawks at 4:46 to even things at one. The Titans regrouped and added a shorthanded goal by Hall and an even-strength marker by Matt Alrich to move in front 3-1.
Powell continued the Titans’ onslaught with his second of the night early in the second and then assisted on Boyle’s tally at 2:59. Rochester pulled starter Pat O’Toole after the fifth Titans’ goal in favor of Aaron Bold. Mike McLellan and Hall also chipped goals as part of a 6-0 Orlando run. Point notched Rochester’s second goal at 13:36 from Grant and Evans to make it 7-2 at halftime.
Grant converted his first of the night at 1:45 of the third to pull Rochester within four. He then assisted on a shorthanded goal at 6:31 to make it 7-4. Orlando added two of the next three goals to head into the fourth ahead 9-5. In the fourth, the Knighthawks’ Point netted his third of the game to again cut the lead down to three. That’s as close as Rochester would get as the Titans got goals from Hall, Maddalena and Bill Greer in a 23-second span to blow open the contest at 12-6. Rochester added two of the game’s last three goals in the second straight road loss.
Rochester’s next game is Saturday, January 30th against the Toronto Rock at 8:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on The Zone 94.1 FM and thezone941.com. Fans can meet their favorite Star Wars characters, purchase lightsabers and get autographs on Star Wars Night. All the proceeds raised will go to charity.
