2009 Provincial Qualifier Wrapups – Peewee

1. Whitby 1 – Well they completed a perfect 11-0 run capturing top spot.  As I mentioned in my last write up, they refuse to lose.  And their biggest challenge is to not take any team lightly, and not be prepared.  No doubt, they are the clear favourite, and the team to beat. Can they be beat? Well anyone can beat anyone, on any given day, but I won’t put money against them!

2. Brampton   – According to my stats they are the only team to have beaten Whitby 1 this season, and they have done it twice.  After a rough week one, by their standards, they got back on track in week two and took # 2 spot.  They ran the table in week two with their only real challenge coming from Orangeville.  Can they beat their nemesis above?  Yes, they have already.  But their other week one loss has to have them wondering about Burlington as well.

3. Burlington –  What is it about Burlington and hot goalies?  There’s another one on this Peewee team.  They beat Brampton in the qualies and they played Whitby 1 to a 5-3 loss (with an empty netter).  While the two above are getting all the attention, this could be the team to really be afraid of.  Their other loss was to Whitby 2 who were playing very inspired lacrosse in week two.   But a massive effort against Clarington, with some great goaltending got them a 2-0 win and 3rd spot.  That game was a classic.

4. Mimico – They had three one goal wins in week two to secure 4th place.  One could argue that they got lucky, or that this is a team that plays well in close games.  I’ll pick the latter.  Not sure they have enough to beat the top three, but they will play hard.  Not always an association that pumps out A teams, but a great accomplishment to be in the top six, and as we all know; anything can happen.  That is why we play the games.

5. Whitby 2 –   All I can say is wow!  To be the number 2 team from any center and able to say we are no worse than the 6th best team in the Province is a feat in itself.  The challenge will be to get the kids not to rest on the fact they got there, but to believe they can challenge for the win.  Huge wins over Burlington and Orangeville, along with a one goal loss to Mimico, say to me they believe.  But that is where the good news ends I think.  Grat job though.

6. Orangeville – Of the top six in Peewee, Orangeville only beat Burlington, losing to the other four.  But most of those games were close.  If they can hang around in games against the top dogs, they have a chance.  It is long shot though.

Fearless Prediction – Final Whitby 1 over Brampton
Long Shot Hopeful – Burlington – they can play with the top two and not all others can.

I think when all is said and done the two top teams will play like the two top teams and meet in the final.  The favorite gets it.

Tomorrow night I will post on Bantam…..

  1. i hope to here your thoughts on a very tight age group. bantom.

  2. What team does Marksy son play for in Bantam ?

  3. Not only has Burlington produced hot goalies in Pee Wee in the past 3 years, Brent Noseworthy (team O) and the current one Spencer Chabrak, but they are cousins…

  4. Marksy,

You say that mimico is doens’t pump out A teams. Wondering why? Other then Whitby and Clarington, they are the only other centre to have an A team from tyke to bantam…

  5. I meant “not always” to mean histiorically. Not slighting Mimico at all, I am gald to see their success, and with an already solid Junior B franchise, they have a great foundation to build on for years to come
