Redmen Win Provides Hope for Post Season Play

Whitby, ON

The Brooklin Redmen and the Barrie Lakeshores were tied for the sixth and final playoff spot going into tonight’s game. Both teams were victorious against the other one time this season, and the winner of tonight’s contest would have the edge over the final playoff spot. For thrilled Redmen fans, tonight’s 6-5 win grants a sense of hope that post-season play is possible.

The Lakeshores have two games remaining as they host Peterborough Friday night and St Regis Sunday afternoon, they have to win both games to get past the Redmen for the final playoff spot. The Redmen meanwhile travel to Ohsweken on Saturday night for a 7 pm date against the Six Nations Chiefs.

Tonight’s game was goaltenders dual as Mike Miron in the Redmen cage was a little stingier than Mike Attwood in the Barrie net.

The Redmen scored first tonight as sophomore, Derek Hopcroft solved Attwood with just over two minutes off the clock. The visitors answered with two of their own, one on the power play before Matt Taylor scored with just over two minutes remaining on the clock for a 2-2 tie after twenty minutes.

Jon Durno found himself in the offensive end as Peter Vipond elected to use the run and gun, two-way lacrosse approach in the middle frame. It paid off as he scored a marker with just one second on the shot clock for the 3-2 lead with half of the middle frame yet to play. The visitors answered that goal with two in less than two minutes for the 4-3 lead after two periods.

The Redmen score the first three of the final frame, with rookie Kyle Buchanan notching two that period. The score was 6-4 for the home side at the mid point of the second period. The Lakeshores made it interesting as Nate Sanderson scored his second of the night at 7:27 to close the gap but that was as close as Barrie would get despite the fact that PJ Johnston called too many men on the Redmen offense with 31 seconds on the clock to give the ball back to the Lakeshores and one more chance to send the game to overtime. However, the Redmen defense led by Miron held off the threat.

Penalties on the night as called by Wayne Paddick and PJ Johnston were 15 minutes for the Redmen and same for the Lakeshores, Geoff Griffiths came to play as usual tonight and fought Matt Baker at 13:14 of the first to fire up the crowd and his teammates. Barrie scored twice on the power play, the Redmen were not able to capitalize.
