Redmen Win Translates to Confidence Boost

Whitby, ON
June 10, 2009

The Redmen limped into tonight’s contest with a record of 1-5 and one third of the season in the books. Just as he did a year ago in a 10-7 win against these same Peterborough Lakers, goalie Kurtis Wagar turned in a great performance tonight and that was an important reason for the 6-4 win over the Lakers.  Redmen fans hope that this win will inject a renewed sense of confidence to allow the Redmen to change course and steer towards a better run as the season lurches toward the mid point.

The opening twenty minutes ended in a 0-0 tie as Wagar and his counterpart, Derek Collins were both solid and later named the players of the game for their respective teams.

Veteran Mat Giles opened the scoring with four minutes off the clock in the middle stanza. The Redmen countered a few minutes later and by the time 2/3 of the game was done nothing further had been settled, as the score was 4-4. The Redmen scored one on the power play and one short handed and each team scored a goal in the last minute of the period. Geoff Griffiths stripped a Laker defender of the ball with just under a minute to go and fed the ball to Derek Hopcroft for his first of two on the night.

The Redmen defense kept the Lakers off the scoreboard in the final frame and Griffiths scored at 3:22 for the eventual winner, Hopcroft added an insurance marker with over half a period to go. As noted, the Redmen defense led by Wagar dug in and held on for the win.

There was an edge to each team and referees Jason Wiswell and Steve Line called 28 minutes in penalties to the Redmen and 12 to the visitors. Wagar was given a two-minute illegal equipment penalty for “flared leg pads” followed by a game misconduct with 1:16 on the clock in the final period.

Redmen are at home a week tonight when the Kitchener Waterloo Kodiaks come to town. The next night the Redmen travel to the Powerade Centre for an 8:00 p.m. commitment versus the defending Mann Cup champion Brampton Excelsiors. On Father’s Day, June 21 the Redmen travel to KW for their third game in five days.
