Redmen Notch First Win of Season in Home Opener

Two milestones were reached this night on opposite ends of the spectrum. With an assist at 18:13 of the second period, Shawn Williams reached 1,400th points as a Redmen. As well, with a goal at 10:55 of the second, rookie Tyler Collins scored his first in a Redmen uniform. It seemed for a time that goals would be hard to come by on this night as Kurtis Wagar and Derrick Gordon played well in their respective nets and it was 0-0 after one period.

The second period saw some offensive action from both sides, Cody Richardson opened the scoring just 38 seconds in before Derek Hopcroft evened the score at 6:18 on a power play goal, the Lakeshores had one penalty on the night and the Redmen capitalized. Score after two was 4-2 for the Redmen.

If the first forty minutes fans saw stingy goaltending; the floodgates opened in the final frame. Four goals were scored in the first two minutes alone, two by the Redmen before the period was even a minute old. The score was 6-2 at that early mark before the visitors rattled off four straight to tie the game with half a period to go. Collins scored the eventual winner off a well-timed long pass from Wagar and with eight minutes left the Redmen were up 7-6. Collins showed his strength as two Barrie defenders bounced off him as he set for the shot in front of Gordon.
The Redmen strengthened their defense for the final few minutes and a late goal by Williams clinched the deal for the 8-6 win. The Lakeshores called a time out with 46 seconds left and pulled their goalie for a last gasp but the Redmen would not be denied a winner for their home opener.

Tom Moxam and Roger Nurse officiated a relatively quiet game, handing out just four minors, three to the Redmen and the one to the Lakeshores. The Lakeshores could not capitalize on their man advantage opportunities.

The Redmen will travel to the Memorial Centre in Peterborough for a game Thursday night against the Lakers at 8 pm. They host St Regis Sunday May 31, 2009 at 6 pm in the annual Scott McMichael Minor Lacrosse Night. Local fans can make it a lacrosse double header as the Brooklin Merchants host Ajax Pickering at 2 pm at Luther Vipond Arena.
