Roughnecks Clean Up – Mom Would Be Proud

Story and Photos by Tom Frank

The Calgary Roughnecks shut-out the visiting San Jose Stealth for 45 minutes and 24 seconds in the Western Final on their way to a 17-5 victory. There were thundering cheers from the 9,639 fans at the Pengrowth Saddledome last night, including the Mother of Roughnecks owner, Brad Bannister. The Riggers and their faithful followers are now rewarded with hosting the Champions Cup Final this Friday, May 15, 7:30pm MST vs. the New York Titans.

The game winner was scored in the final seconds of the first quarter by none other than Calgary’s goalie, Matt King. Down 5-0 already in the first, San Jose pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. After a shot, King quickly scooped up the ball, saw no one in front of him and lobbed the ball up… nothing but net. He also made 29 saves during his shut-out string and finished the night with 42 saves on 47 shots. Calgary led by 6-0 after one, 9-0 at the half and 15-0 after three.

Helping King with scoring was Captain Tracey Kelusky with 5 goals and 1 assist in the 1st half, Dane Dobbie (3,3), Scott Ranger (2,7), Kaleb Toth (2,4) and singles by Jeff Moleski, Curt Malawsky and Nolan Heavenor. Josh Sanderson lead all Calgary point getters with 10 points (1 goal, 9 assists).

The closest San Jose came to scoring in the first half was a point-blank shot from Tom Johnson as he tried to bounce it under Calgary’s netminder. King dropped down and was able to cover it up on the goal line. The Stealth finally got on the scoreboard, 24 seconds into the fourth quarter with a goal from rookie Rhys Duch. They followed that up quickly with another tally from Jeff Zywicki. Captain Colin Doyle was held to one assist on the night.

Overall, Calgary played strong defensively, limiting San Jose’s opportunities, and moved the ball well with a balanced attack. They will look to continue their winning ways when they meet the New York Titans next Friday in the Champions Cup Final.
