Five Point Fourth By Shannon Leads Philadelphia Past Buffalo 13-11

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Wings defeated the defending NLL Champion Buffalo Bandits by the score of 13-11 at the Wachovia Center Friday night. With the victory Philly improves to 2-3 while the Bandits fall to 5-1.

With the Bandits leading 9-8 after three quarters of play, it was former Bandit AJ Shannon stepping up for the Wings, adding five points on five fourth quarter goals, including beating Bandits netminder Mike Thompson for the game winner with 2:59 remaining in regulation. Shannon added an insurance goal with just under two minutes left to seal the victory.

Leading the Wings offense was Mat Giles who recorded three goals and three assists for a season high six point performance. Shannon (2G, 3A) and Merrick Thompson (1G, 4A) both contributed with five points each. Drew Westervelt (3G), David Mitchell (1G, 2A) and Geoff Snider (3A) rounded out the Philadelphia.leaders finishing with three points each in the victory.

Snider was 24-for-28 (85.7%) on faceoffs and recorded a season high 26 loose balls becoming the fastest player to record 500 in a career. In just 36 career games, Snider has collected 512 loose balls. For the Bandits, Phil Sanderson recorded a season high 17 loose balls as he became just the 7th player in league history to record 1000 loose balls in a career.

Mark Steenhuis led Buffalo with two goals and three assists while John Tavares added a goal and three helpers in the loss.

In goal, Philly’s Brandon Miller registered 34 saves for the victory, his second of the season. Buffalo’s Mike Thompson finished with 41 saves in the loss.
