Riggers Improve to 4-0 On Young Season

San Jose Stealth @ Calgary Roughnecks – Saturday, January 24th, 2009
-Leon Perrier

The Calgary Roughnecks won for their fourth straight this season and second time against the San Jose Stealth in front of 9,828 fans Saturday night at the Pengrowth Saddledome. Calgary has a perfect 4-0 record and is atop the West Division standings out to their best start in 8 NLL seasons. In their first meeting this season, the Roughnecks defeated the Stealth 12-10 in both team’s season opener on January 9th.

The Roughnecks fresh off a win against the Toronto Rock last Saturday walked into the Saddledome ready and focused to give the home fans what they wanted; another win, this time over the Stealth again. From the opening warm up and introductions the building was electric and everyone was ready to see a great match and win at home.

The Riggers jumped off to a huge start scoring 3 times in the first 2 minutes and early on lead by up to 5 goals. The Stealth tried keeping it close but in the end it was the Roughneck’s. Scoring was early and often with action packed hits and a fight early on which only got the crowd more wound up and the Roughneck’s more focused on the task at hand.
Both teams had potent power plays on the night as the Roughnecks went 5 of 8 with the man advantage and the Stealth scored on 5 of 6 of their opportunities. The Stealth were able to come alive making it close with Power Play goals, during a charge managed in the second, and again in the third but a few interesting calls and plays late in the fourth didn’t help their cause.

With 30.9 seconds left, Calgary was awarded a penalty shot for an illegal substitution resulting in too many men on the floor. Dane Dobbie would use that opportunity to score for the Roughneck’s and solidify the win 16 – 13.
