-Tommy Frank

After winning their season’s opener in San Jose Friday night, 12-10 vs. the Stealth, the Calgary Roughnecks returned home early Saturday morning for their home opener against provincial rivals the Edmonton Rush.

Calgary defeated Edmonton 10-5 in pre-season and had a 2-1 record against the Rush last season.

Curt Malawsky scored at 4:58 in overtime to give the Roughnecks a 10-9 overtime victory over the Edmonton Rush. In what looked like a unintentional pass into the corner from Kaleb Toth, Scott Ranger recovered the loose ball and found Malawsky breaking into the middle to score the hat-trick and game winner.

There was great end-to-end action in overtime and some great saves by goalies, Matt King for Calgary and Steve Dietrich for Edmonton.

Malawsky scored his other two goals in the 1st quarter, both on the power play. Other scorers for the Roughnecks included Peter McFetridge with his first 2 goals in the NLL, and singles from Kaleb Toth, Jeff Moleski, Josh Sanderson, Dane Dobbie and Scott Ranger.

Edmonton’s leading goal-getter was Dan Teat with the hat-trick, Jason Wulder and Callum Crawford scored 2 apiece and singles came from Jamie Floris and Jimmy Quinlan.

It only took 27 seconds to get the 11,197 hometown fans into the action as Sanderson scored for Calgary. On their 2nd shot of the game, Roughnecks Dobbie scored a short-handed marker at 2:45 for an early 2-0 lead. Edmonton, responded with 2 of their own from Quinlan and Crawford (SH). The Riggers finished the quarter with three more goals, 2 on the powerplay.

Toth made it 6-2 for the Roughnecks with a blast from the point at 6:11 of the 2nd quarter. Teat and Crawford scored for the Rush. Shots on goal at the half, 35-18 in favour of Calgary.

McFetridge scored his first NLL goal, 30 seconds into the 3rd quarter. A nice breakaway goal while being chased down by two Edmonton players. Moleski scored another short-handed marker for Calgary to make it 8-4. The Rush scored the final two goals of the quarter, both during powerplays, from Teat and Wulder.

The Rush kept the pressure on Calgary, with goals from Floris and Wulder, to tie the game at 8 with approximately 6 minutes remaining in regulation. McFetridge scored his second goal 40 seconds after to give the Roughnecks the lead 9-8. The final 4 minutes, had some good transition breakaways by both teams. With 1:26 remaining, Edmonton called for a video review to confirm Teat’s hat-trick goal that sent the game into overtime.

Other Game Notes:

-Kaleb Toth (1g 4a tonight) is 1 point shy of passing Lewis Ratcliffe for the all-time franchise points scoring lead
