2008 Opening Ceremonies / Alberta – Iroquois Game

The National Games have finally arrived here in Whitby.  This years Opening Ceremonies were a scaled down version of last years opening.  Gone are the games between the moms and the other ideas.   This year was short and simple, to the point.  All the teams were paraded onto the floor and introduced by their respective Provinces.  The Girls Under 15 Field teams from Osahwa and Orangeville were presented with their medals and a couple of short speeches. I was able to catch the rioughly 17-18 minutes on film and it is below:

We immediately got into the first game between the reigning 2007 Bantam Gold Medalists from Team Iroquois and the 2007 Bronze Medal Finalists from Team Alberta.  It was a very spirited, high tempo affair from both teams.  The game was tied after one period 1-1.  Iroquoius held a 2-1 lead after two, and the final ended a 3-2 victory for Iroquois.

Team Iroquois looked strong as everyone thought they would be.  But I was pleasantly surprised however to see a big, strong and fast team from Alberta.  As I’ve mntioned in past years, Alberta continues to get better each year at these games, and this Bantam Team looked good.  Both goalies played well as evidenced by the low scores, but Iroquois had far more chances than did Alberta.  Having not yet seen any other teams, I think Alberta will really make some noise this year.

I am very pleased to be able to share some pictures below from the opening ceremonies.  A big thank you to Kevin Dunn for providing these to me as my camera was not functioning.
