Fratmen Prevail!

Windsor AKO FratmenJuly 8, 2008

The Windsor AKO Fratmen defeated the St. Catharines Spartan Warriors 11-8 in front of a very large and excited home crowd at Forest Glade Arena. The win gives the Fratmen the best of five series three games to two.

The victory now pits the Fratmen against the juggernaught known as the Six Nations Rebels. The Rebels are currently undefeated on the season, and have not lost a regular season game going back to May of 2007, when the Fratmen defeated them in overtime. The western conference semi-final series will begin on Friday night in Six Nations at the Gaylord Powless Arena. Game time is 8:00pm. The rest of the schedule will be released as soon as it is available.

Tonight’s see-saw battle between these two evenly matched teams was a well played match that could have gone either way. Spartan jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Chris Attwood and Shayne Adams. Donald Matte replied with his first goal of the season, and Brett Hickey scored with 14 seconds remaining in the first period as the two teams went to the break all even 2-2.

In the second period Andrew Ryckman put the Fratmen ahead 3-2, but 40 seconds later Shayne Adams scored for the Spartan to tie up the affair at 3-3. Greg Norris scored for the Spartan to go ahead 4-3, but just 12 seconds later Garrison Matte ties the game 4-4. Spartan scored the next two goals with Joel Matthews and Kyle Winterbottom making it 6-4 Spartan. The turning point in the game came when Spartan #44 Brett Stolar hit Fratmen #14 Andrew Soulliere with a vicious check from behind into the goal. Stolar was ejected with a five minute major and a game misconduct. The Fratmen came roaring back with the next four goals. Travis Boomer, D.J. Turner, Jeff Rivait and Brett Hickey, with his second, jumped into a 7-5 lead. The Spartan got one back on a goal by Joel Matthews to make the score 8-7 after forty minutes.

The Fratmen opened the scoring in the third period on a goal by Andrew Ryckman, and another , his third of the game, by Brett Hickey to go up 10-7. With eleven minutes to play the Spartan’s Dillon Hendsbee scored to make the game 10-8. The Fratmen defence stiffened, and the Spatrans never got another good look the rest of the game. With 3:15 remaining Jeff Rivait scored his second of the game to seal the deal 11-8.

Eril McLaren got the win in goal and made 49 saves for Windsor as the Fratmen were outshot 57-43 on the game.
