Young Redmen Team Learns Value of Playing a Full 60 Minutes

July 3, 2008
Peterborough, ON

The 2008 version of the Brooklin Redmen is a young team with eight of the 20 players on the game sheet in their rookie season. They were up against the defending Mann Cup champion Peterborough Lakers tonight but learned that a full 60-minute effort at both ends of the floor and a hot goalie can be a recipe for success. In front of an announced crowd of 2,548 fans they turned in an impressive game and came out with the 10-7 win on the night.

The Lakers scored first at 3:50 off a goal by Brian Croswell but three straight unanswered goals for the visitors and they took a 3-1 lead to the first break.

At 16:20 of the second period it was 5-1 for the Redmen after a shorthanded marker that also chased Derek Collins from the Laker net in favour of recently signed “out of retirement” Pat O’Toole. That seemed to help the Lakers as the teams tied 5-5 in that frame. Kurtis Wagar continued his steady play in the Redmen net and stoned John Grant who was in alone with eight minutes left in the second. Grant would go on to score an empty net goal with 11 seconds left in the second to make it 8-6 for the Redmen after two periods. There was a delay in the second as the game clock was malfunctioning, seemed that the off button was stuck as the clock kept running after a whistle much to the dismay of Lakers bench boss Jamie Batley.

The third period continued in the same manner for the Redmen. Smart lacrosse, ball control, tough defence and clock management were all working wonders tonight. As the clock wound down, Shawn Williams scored on an empty netter for his third on the night and the 10-7 win. The octogenarian high up in section 16 at the Memorial Centre would have to put away her red bra for another night, a real treat for fans as this super fan waves her bra over her head the same way that kids wave their t-shirts after the home team scores in arenas everywhere.

Shawn Williams was (3,3) on the night for a total of 57 points on the season, just four back of leader John Tavares who has 61. Wagar turned in the best performance in this only his second season of play in Major Series.

Brent McCauley and PJ Johnston assessed 33 minutes in penalties to the Lakers and 23 to the Redmen. Steve Hutchins and Kyle Laverty had a tussle in the second period. Each team scored a short-handed marker on the night.

Redmen (4-8 ) are out of the basement and one point ahead of Barrie for the final playoff spot. The Lakers at (7-5) are in third behind Brampton and St Regis.

Redmen will host the St Regis Indians (8-4) and John Tavares on Sunday July 6, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. This game has also been billed as Clarington Minor and West Durham Minor Lacrosse Night.
