NLL Week 3 Roundup

Well it was quite an eventful week 3 in the National Lacrosse League.

Minnesota took the home and home from Toronto with a win in Toronto Friday night in Overtime (17-16) and a lopsided victory in Minnesota on Saturday night (11-4) . The Friday night game was a highly spirited affair with 137 penalty minutes and 33 goals. Exciting for the fans, but I’m sure both teams were not pleased with their effort. Saturday, I’m sure only Toronto was not pleased as Minnesota came out and never trailed in the game.

Ryan Ward scored 8 times in the two games to lead Minnesota, while Josh Sanderson led the Rock with 6 scores.

Rochester and Buffalo split their weekend series with each team winning on the road. Rochester spoiled the Bandits home opener on Friday, claiming their 16th win in a row dating back to last season by a 12-9 score. On Saturday however, that streak came to an end as Buffalo went into Blue Cross Arena in Rochester and took the Knighthawks home opener 14-9.

Mark Steenhuis led Buffalo scoring 6 in the two games, while Scott Evans led Rochester with 5.

Colorado moved to 2-0 and Edmonton to 0-2 with the Mammoth defeating the Rush 14-11 on Saturday night. In a close back and forth game, Gavin Prout led the Mammoth with a goal and six assists, while AJ Shannon was welcomed back to the Edmonton lineup scoring 3 times.

Philadelphia recorded a win in their home opener while at the same time handing Chicago their second loss of 2008. Philadelphia fired 71 shots at Chicago goalies and came out with a 19-11 win. Athan Iannucci scored 5 for Philly, while three different players each recorded 2 goals for Edmonton.

San Jose handed Calgary their second loss in as many games while the Stealth won their first game on the road. In another back and forth game, Calgary scored twice in the last minute to send the game to Overtime, only to see Luke Wiles score 47 seconds into the extra period for the San Jose win. Jeff Zywicki scored 5 for the Stealth while Lewis Ratcliffe scored 3 (along with 6 assists).

In the late game of the night it was the battle of the brothers. Casey Powell and Patrick Merrill of New York played against younger brothers Ryan Powell and Brodie Merrill with the Portland Lumberjax. It was the Titans coming out on top in this one by a 14-11 score. Casey Powell led the Titans with 8 points, while Portland newcomer Dan Dawson had 4 goals and 5 assists. This one was highlighted (if you are a Titans fan), by Titans goalie Matt Vinc scoring on the empty net with only 2 seconds left in the game.
