Warriors, Redmen Starting A New Era

Whitby WarriorsWith the Brooklin Redmen not making the playoffs in Major Series Lacrosse and the Whitby Warriors being ousted by the eventual Champions from Six Nations in Junior A Lacrosse in 2007, changes to both clubs were inevitable.

This week both teams made some announcements and the hope is that the new staffs for both clubs will turn things around.  On the Warrior club, the team announced that local lacrosse man Corny Derks will take over as the Head Coach with Reg Andres and Ryan Harris serving as Assistant Coaches.  Derks has been a mainstay in local lacrosse circles for many, many years and most recently has coahced in Whitby’s Minor Lacrosse System, as well as two years with Team Ontario.  The Warriors lose a number of veteran players so many believe there will be a rebuilding period  having lost so many.

For the Redmen, it was announced that former standout Redmen goalie, and OLA / CLA Hall of Famer, Wayne Colley will assume the role of General Manager for the coming 2008 season.  No coaching staff has been announced as yet, but there are many rumours flying around that another great will return to the bench in Pete Vipond.  Vipond was the Master of the Redmen teams that dominated in the 90’s and recently had been coaching Ottawa’s entry in the Junior A system.  His return (if indeed true) would bring immediate credibility back to the Redmen program.

As a supporter of both clubs, I can say with optimism and eagerness that 2008 could be a great year in the area for lacrosse.
