The Official Close To The Festival – Novice Results Are In

Well another lacrosse Festival has come and gone and with the Novice Finals this afternoon and this evening we are now officially closed for another season. Whoa, ok not so fast the final six goes next weekend in Guelph (Peewee, Bantam and Midget “A”), the Bantams are in St. Catharines, and the Intermediates are in Midland,  and then we are done.

This afternoon I was able to catch bits and pieces of games and then all of the Novice “A” final.

To start in the Novice “D” division Fort Erie defeated Orangeville #3 by a 14-5 score. I was not at this game so I really cannot comment on it other than to congratulate both teams for getting there. In the C2 division I caught a very little bit of the Niagara-on-the-Lake and Cornwall final in which N.O.T.L. was victorious by a 4-3 score.

In Novice C1, I watched Welland and Orangeville #2 play. This was a very close battle between what appeared to me to be two evenly matched teams. Welland led most of the way by no more than a goal, then late in the game Orangeville scored to tie it. Just when we thought we were headed to Overtime, Welland scored with roughly 20 seconds for a 3-2 win. Orangeville did have a chance very late but could not score.

In what I would say was the most exciting game of the day or night, the B2 Final had Orillia against Oakville. Tied after 3 periods the teams went to Overtime. In Overtime it looked as though neither team was too worried about defense as the teams traded goals back and forth over the last couple of minutes. Up by a goal late in the first Overtime Orillia was in a defensive mode and throwing the ball down the floor toward Oakville’s empty net at any chance possible. The first shot down the floor missed the open net, Oakville got the ball back down the floor and had another unsuccessful shot. Orillia’s goalie got the ball and hurled down the floor again but it was intercepted  at center by an Oakville player (with about 12 seconds on the clock).   Seeing not much time is left on the clock the Oakville player simply launches the ball toward Orillia’s net. An Orillia player goes to catch the ball in front of his crease and at the same time the Orillia goalie goes to get the ball. The two team mates hit sticks and the ball dribbles over the goal line with about 3/10 of a second on the clock. Well wouldn’t you know it, into sudden victory we go and a few minutes in, Oakville scores on a bounce shot just of the crease for the 10-9 double overtime win. Orillia players were just heartbroken and Oakville players were ecstatic. It was an absolute thriller of a finish.

Novice “B” had Whitby #2 up against Orangeville #1 and in a fairly close game Whitby pulled out a 4-2 win. I only saw the first period of this game as the Novice “A” final was starting on another pad.

In that Novice “A” final Whitby and Halton Hills, two organizations that know each other quite well faced off. The game started out pretty reserved with neither team generating a lot of chances. Eventually, Whitby opened up the scoring and once started they never stopped. They went on an offensive burst that saw them open up a 7-0 lead. Halton scored a goal late, but it was little too late. The final was 7-1.

So there you have it, the Novice summary. Congrats to all finalists on some real exciting lacrosse Championships.
