Medal Games A Real Treat!

With the Gold Medal games being held tongiht I was able to get some shots of the Champions. Team Alberta Peewee defeated Iroquois in a close match 5-4. and was the first snap shot I was able to get. Although I was not able to catch all of this game I did catch a fair bit of the third period and the fans were into the game, as well as the players. Congratulations to both teams on a hard fought and entertaining game.

The Peewee gold medal game featured British Columbia and Ontario. In a nutshell this game was fairly entertaining, but I think it is safe to say that there were some very tired young men on the floor. Of course British Columbia having played 10 games in 6 days, and Ontario having played 9 games in the 6 days could have had something to do with it. Similar to their round robin game, Ontario scored to take the early lead, and British Columbia tied it fairly quickly after. Then Ontario went on a bit of a run, eventually opening up a 5-1 lead.

British Columbia scored late in the second frame and yet again I was wondering if this would lead to a run in the third. Again simialr to the round robin game it was not meant to be as Ontario scored once in the third, for the eventual 6-2 win. Of note, both goalies (Willaim Schwan of BC and Brent Noseworthy of Ontario) were impressive in the game and deserving of their “Player of the Game” awards.

I will also mention a pretty unsung hero for Ontario in Jacob Harris of Halton Hills. Throughout the tournament he was a very solid player for the Team and in my opinion he started the ball rolling today with two of Ontario’s first three goals, and an assist on the other. He is one of those big players, that always steps up in the big games, and fortunately for Ontario they had a few players doing this all week.

I had the chance to speak very briefly to BC’s Coach Doug Clark, and he was complimentary of Team Ontario and Head Coach Derek Keenan. He stated that Keenan is a good Coach; that he was happy to have beaten him last season and wondered about beating him again this year.

In the Bantam “A” Gold final, as I mentioned in my pre game post, I figured the game would come down to Ontario’s ability to score on Iroquois’ outstanding goalie, Kanathonson Horne-David. With names on the roster like Powless, Bomberry, Hill and Martin I also figured Ontario would need to keep the scorers of Iroquois in check as well.

The game started out fast and exciting with end-to-end action as I had thought. It took the teams roughly 10 minutes but Iroquois opened the scoring on a Power Play goal, which Ontario answered right off of the next face-off. From there, Ontario scored twice right near the end of the first period for a 3-1 lead after one.

In the second, Iroquois came out and quickly socred twice in a span of about 20 seconds to tie the game. At that point we had one of those plays in a game that really can help you or hurt you. Team Ontario called for a shirt violation on Iroquois goalie Horne-David. He was assessed a two minute minor penalty for illegal equipment, but was not ejected from the game. Now this sort of scenario typically fires up one of the two teams, and on this night it was Team Iroquois.

They successfully killed off the two minute minor penalty and Horne-David pretty much closed the door the rest of the way on Ontario. It seemed to also inspire his team mates as Team Iroquois went on to score the next 4 goals to take a 7-3 lead. Ontario got a couple tallies late in the game, but it was too late at that point.

Congratulations to all the teams in todays Chmapionships games, they were all a treat to watch, and my apologies for not having more of a writeup on “ALL” the finals but the sleep / rest factor has started to become and issue and I needed to be selective in what I could attend and not attend.

Check back sometime tomorrow as I will have a wrapup with a few pics from the medal ceremonies for both Peewee and Bantam.

Good night!

  1. Gary, will there be any video footage added from the Gold and Brronze medal games?

  2. Yes, all I have are the two Gold medal games though. I just finished my season yesterday with my kids Peewee team so I will now have some time over the next week or so to get some up.

    Check back soon.
