Curtain Draws on Redmen Season

For Immediate Release
Brampton, ON

For the second time in three years the Brooklin Redmen will not participate in post-season play in Major Series Lacrosse. In what has been a frustrating, infuriating and utterly exasperating year for the club the Brampton Excelsiors handed the Redmen a 9-8 loss as this was the last chance for the Redmen to catch the KW Kodiaks for the sixth and final playoff spot. The Redmen end the 18 game schedule with a record of 3-14-1.

Matt Roik went in net for the Redmen while Brandon Miller was the backstop for Brampton. Brent McCauley and M. Robinson were the officials as assigned by the Ontario Lacrosse Association.

The home side opened the scoring and never lost the lead after that. The Redmen scored twice in the opening frame and each goal hit Miller and had enough smoke on it to trickle in behind him, both goals were similar. The Excelsiors solved Roik on four different occasions for the 4-2 lead after the opening period. The first period saw a spirited fight between Derek Suddons and Paul Dawson, Suddons took exception to Dawson’s rough play on captain Shawn Williams and stood in for him earning a game misconduct as third man in to the fight.

The second period belonged to the Redmen as they outscored the Excelsiors 5-3 to tie the game 7-7. Mike Accursi made the game and was an impact as two of the five Redmen markers were his that frame. Jamie Taylor also returned from injury to score that period on a short-handed marker while the home team scored twice on the man advantage.

The Excelsiors took the momentum away from the Redmen with a goal at 0:23 of the final frame. Referees blew off the face-off and gave the Excelsiors the ball, as Roik was tardy getting back on the floor for the final period. Brampton capitalized as Aaron Wilson scored his second of the contest. Josh Sanderson scored his third of the night with five minutes off the clock to make it 9-7 for Brampton.

The Excelsiors got tough on defence and began using more and more of the thirty-second clock to run the time as much as they were able. Charlie Girdler, call up from the Brooklin Merchants scored a picture-perfect goal as he was positioned perfectly on the left side of the crease and off a pass from Williams and Accursi made it 9-8 with 1:43 on the clock.

Redmen took a gamble and called for an equipment check on Miller, he was not wearing a throat guard and for his negligence received a game misconduct. No sooner had Anthony Cosmo taken his spot in the net the Redmen called for another equipment measurement this time claiming his lower leg pads were too wide. Both referees, Cosmo and a couple of players went to measure, Paul Dawson, third goalie for the Excelsiors went as well in case Cosmo also got penalized. The crowd was elated to see Cosmo trot back to his crease and the Redmen were called for delay of game. The Excelsiors killed the last 29 seconds for the win. The Redmen go home with 10 months to ponder this most difficult of seasons.

Good luck to the Merchants, Green Gaels and Warriors who have all started playoff rounds in their respective leagues.

Penalty minutes for the Redmen were 41 and for Brampton 31 minutes.
