The Brooklin Redmen came into tonight’s game three points up on Kitchener Waterloo for the final playoff spot in Major Series Lacrosse. The Redmen after tonight have two games left while the Kodiaks have four remaining. Brooklin failed to widen the lead over KW despite a third period flurry that was too little and ultimately too late in a 13-11 loss to the visiting Barrie Lakeshores.

The game was delayed almost half an hour after the Global Positioning System unit malfunctioned in Gary Martin’s car that saw him and fellow referee Mark Gardonio rushing to the game from points north. The Redmen went with veteran Matt Roik in net while Rob Blasdell, on familiar turf, took his spot in the west end goal.

The visitors jumped out to a quick two goal lead after 2:13. Shawn Williams countered with his first of five on the night. Jeff Zywicki tied the game at 11:35 with the Redmen’s third power play goal of the period. Ex-Redmen Brad McArthur and Sean Greenhalgh found the net behind Roik to regain the two goal margin. With 4:14 showing on the clock in the first and the Lakeshores up 6-4 Redmen coach Ian McGough pulled Roik in favour of rookie Kurtis Wagar. That seemed to settle things for a while as the teams went to break with the visitors up by the same score.

The Redmen were happy to have Jamie Taylor back in the line-up as he and Shawn Williams scored in the first six minutes to bring the home side back to a 6-6 tie. However, the Redmen could not maintain any momentum as a speedy and talented Lakeshore team rattled off five in a row to make it 11-6 late in the third period, including one short-handed and one power play goal. Williams stopped the bleeding with his third at 19:15. However, Chris Driscoll found the empty net at 19:59 to give the Lakeshores a 12-7 lead after forty minutes.

The start of the third period almost came to a grinding halt as neither team played with much passion or urgency. At 13:18 Zywicki changed that as he scored on a diving effort after being dragged down by a Lakeshore defender. That goal gave the Redmen the spark they needed as three more goals came in quick succession to close the gap to 12-11 in favour of the visitors. However, the Lakeshores again snuffed out any chance of a Redmen win as Bryan Kazarian scored 29 seconds later and then they won the ensuing face-off and killed off the clock for the 13-11 win.

The win gives Barrie a record of 11-4 good for 22 points, one up on Peterborough for first overall, but the Lakers have two games in hand. The Redmen meanwhile drop to a disappointing 3-12-1 for seven points and they remain a tenuous three points up on Kitchener Waterloo, who have two games in hand, for the final playoff spot. Things do not get easier as the Redmen have only two regular season games remaining. The defending champion Peterborough Lakers come to town Saturday July 14, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. and the Redmen end on the road next Thursday July 19, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. at the Powerade Centre in Brampton.

Penalties assessed were 16 minutes to the Lakeshores who had one power play and one short-handed marker and 36 minutes to the Redmen who had three power-play goals. Scott Campbell was handed a game misconduct for coming to the aid of Gavin Prout in the second period.
