Fan Support For Major / Junior Lacrosse

I am writing on here to echo the sentiments of Mark Stehlin (PR for the Brooklin Redmen).

Fan support this season for both the Whitby Warriors and Brooklin Redmen has been pretty poor. Now Mark did not say that, I did. I know that both the Redmen and the Warriors appreciate the supportive fans that they do get, but they are not close to getting enough of them.

Whitby Minor Lacrosse is, I believe the largest minor lacrosse association in Canada, with over 1400 players in Paperweight – Intermediate boys and girls lacrosse. Yet on any given night you can see less than 100 fans in the stands at a Major Junior or Senior game. Now not everyone can be out of town on these nights so the crowds should be much better…but they’re not.

The question is why? I know the Redmen have not been doing too great this season in the standings, but I will say that the effort has always been there in most every outing, and they have also been dealing with some injuries. The Warriors however, are doing very well, and should contend for this season’s Minto Cup. So why the lack of support? Gate fees are not outrageous by any means ($8 – $10, and most kids get in free), many game nights start at 8:00 with a few at 7:00 pm.

In contrast, for teams like Peterborough and I’m sure Barrie, Brampton, Six Nations, attendance seems to not be an issue.

So I encourage you local lacrosse fans to put down your remote, get off your chip catcher (the couch), and get your tail on down to Iroquois Park and see some games. If we cannot begin to support these teams until playoff time, they may not be here any longer, and there will be no playoffs to see!
