Ahhhh, Those Were The Days!

With a little break in the NLL action because of the All-Star game, I decided to get a little self indulgent. I remembered that Ron had sent me a couple of pictures of him playing in the 70′s. Of course, I had just recently received an old newspaper from my cousin. My dear aunt who passed away last year had kept it from our 1985 Minto Cup Championship. So I decided to put up a few pics from both. If you click on any of the images, you can see a full screen picture.

The first is of Messer showing his prowess as a natural goal scorer. I don’t know about you, but it looks to me like he will land in the crease! And back in the day, he would have been in the crease. Therefore Messer….NO GOAL! Of course these are the days of wooden sticks and chin straps / mouth guards. Boy, oh boy……

In the second one I just figured out why all the kids are afraid of him. He looks like an angry beast. And look at the poor goalie. Try to take one off of the top of the foot with those pads and you have no hope! Of course Mess would tell everyone he is not hitting the goalie’s foot, he is putting it in the back of the net….

Okay, fast forward to 1985, and because I am so much younger than Messer these pics should not look as old ( ), and here is a pic of us from the local newspaper the day after our game 7 Minto Cup win against the Gait brothers and the Esquimault Legion. This was on the floor at Iroquois Park Arena in Whitby. A much thinner me, I am pictured with Dave Sachko, and Steve Skene, both who still live in the area. Thinking about that last picture, Sach used to have more tape holding his gear together than any other goalie I ever saw. I still speak to both of these guys fairly often. Lacrosse teammates don’t ever lose touch with one another.

Last and certainly not least, here is the presentation of the Minto Cup to our captains from that year, Ross Tabor, Joe Nieuwendyk, and Eric Perroni. What a team that was, and what a year that was. Without a doubt, the best lacrosse team I was ever fortunate enough to be a part of.

Ahhh, the memories. Has it really been that long?

1979 Minto Cup Final – Game Video

I am extremely pleased that I have been able to obtain a copy of the complete 1979 Minto Cup Final game; the Burnaby Lakers vs. the Peterborough Centurions (although I knew them as the Century 21′s). The game that year was played at Max Bell Arena in Calgary, Alberta, and was a Round Robin format. A third team from Alberta won only one game, ironically against Burnaby. The Final game was broadcast on CBC with Don Wittman and Morely Kells calling the action.

The two team lists are below, and were provided by the Wamper (Larry Power). Larry has the program from this final game.

1988 Mann Cup Brooklin vs. Coquitlam

I am absolutely ecstatic to be able to present this to you. With the permisison of Larry Power (Wamper’s Bible Of Lacrosse), I am extremely pleased to offer you this complete game 6 of the 1988 Mann Cup Championship from Iroquois Park in Whitby, Ontario. It is 20 years ago this summer that these two teams played this series. I had to reduce the size to be able to upload it (and therefore a little of the quality), but you can still see it and hear the commentary, which Wamper does along with Brian Lunney. I was at this game, and it was electric for those in the stands that were Brooklin fans.

Please, if anyone out there chooses to embed this video on their site, ACKNOWLEDGE that you got it from Wamper’s BIBLE of Lacrosse. While I am not looking to be recognized for Larry’s work, be respectful enough to the man that has done the work getting this for all to see.

Bottom line, if you take anything from this site, regardless of who it came from give credit to who it belongs to. A simple email request (as I always do with Larry), would also be appreciated!

1931 Pro Lacrosse Montreal vs. Toronto

Another video provided by Wamper and his Bible Of Lacrosse. This video shows a Pro game played between Montreal and Toronto. A few points to note about the game then:

1) First the crease and net go right to the end boards so that there is no room for anyone to go behind the net.
2) Notice near the end of the video, even though the players are not wearing helmets, when emotions start to run high they have no problem swinging their sticks at each others heads, and
3) The ref is wearing a tie and it looks like dress pants.

September 28, 1974 Philadelphia vs.Rochester Videos

A big thank you must go out to Wamper’s Bible of Lacrosse site for providing the videos below. The first two are courtesy of one of our recent Heroes of Lacrosse, Philadelphia Wings’ John Grant (#12). He had an outstanding reach as witnessed in one of his goals here, while on the other he shows that using the wooden stick, he was one of the players in the day that could still pick the corners of the net.

The third video is one of the Wings Terry Rowland (#27) using his size and strength in driving to the net and scoring on Merv Marshall.

And lastly, there is one of Jim Wasson (#16) of Philadelphia, using his quickness on a much larger defender, driving the net and also scoring a nice goal.

Peterborough vs. Brooklin (more 1980′s)

Continuing our series of photos from Luther Vipond Arena in the 1980′s, more pictures from one of the classic matchups – Brooklin vs. Peterborough. Freddie Upshaw of the Brooklin Redmen (# 3) takes a shot while the “shooter” Ken Colley (# 00) glances back to see the result.

In the second picture one of Brooklin’s all-time greats, Gil Nieuwendyk (# 9) is shooting while another great John Jordan (# 32) looks on. Way down in the other end is Hall of Fame goalie Wayne Colley (# 41).

I could really use some help from anyone out there on the names of the Peterborough players.

Continuing with some of the photos passed on to my by Brian Drew (taken by sports photographer Bill Stannett), here are a few more from the 1964 Oshawa Green Gaels at Children’s Arena.

In the first photo, legendary Gaels goaltender Merv Marshall (# 1) looks to make a save while Jim Higgs (# 6) looks on.

The second photo shows the Green Gaels in the offensive end, with # 4 Jim Hinkson, and # 43 Johnny Davis in view.
