Does The Game Take A Toll on Family Life?

I cannot believe the words of encouragement so far that we’ve received about the contents of the site, and we really appreciate those that are contributing (and we’re always looking for more).

I was speaking with my sister a couple of weeks back, mentioned what we were doing, and sent her the link to the site.  Of course, being my sister she said she loved it, and was really impressed, blah, blah, blah.

But being the philosophical one in the family (you know the one that diagnoses everyone whether they want it or not, yes the social worker), she actually suggested something to me I thought I’d throw out here.  What impact does lacrosse have on family life.  Not just that of the player or coach, but the siblings, the spouse, etc.

Speaking for myself now, I have to say growing up with two sisters, I was a spoiled bugger compared to them.  Our family summers were jam packed with lacrosse tournaments, practices, games, nights out to Junior A, Senior A games and the like.  In the winters it was the same deal (but with hockey).  Now, neither of my sisters were the real athletic type (my one sister actually played baseball one year, but I think it was ‘cuz it was like….cool you know).  But what about their interests?  Were they given opportunities to try things that they wanted?  I’m really not sure.  Fortunately for me, today there is no animosity toward me, but I do know (at least now) that I got the lions share of attention, money spent on me, whatever you want to call it.

It is ironic that today I have one son that plays lacrosse competitively, a second son that could care less about sports, and a daughter that is not really old enough to know what she wants to do yet.  But my wife and I do speak about it constantly; the fact that we must give the others the opportunities to explore their interests, as well as make the time for them to share in it with them.

So I’d be interested in hearing from others out there.  In today’s rush around society, where sports are played almost every night, does someone in your house suffer because of it?  If so, are you planning to change it?
