Youth lacrosse is a growing sport in the Durham Region and this is reflected in the growth of the field game at the high school level. Most folks would be pleased with the high calibre of play at the top levels of LOSSA lacrosse as well as the progress of the new programs just starting out. Here is a snapshot of schools declaring lacrosse for 2007:
LOSSA High School Field Lacrosse Programs (http://www.lossa.on.ca/index.php?pr=Lacrosse&=SID)
LAKE ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION - 33 Schools
Boys Varsity Lacrosse: 16 schools - All Saints, Bowmanville, Cartwright, Central, Courtice, O’Connor, Wilson, Donevan, Leo Austin, Holy Trinity, Pereyma, Notre Dame, Dwyer, Pine Ridge, McLaughlin, St. Stephens
Girls Lacrosse: 11 schools - All Saints, Anderson, O’Connor, Wilson, Donevan, Leo Austin, Henry St, Pereyma, Sinclair, St. Stephens, Uxbridge
Play this year will be divisional based upon strength of the program and size of the school. Last year boys teams played in three divisions A, B & C and I suspect it will be the same this year.
Kenner High School in Peterborough puts on a high school field lacrosse tournament and this year there will be a Girls tournament on May 30-31st as well as the OFSSA Boys A/AA Championships on June 7th. The AAA/AAAA Boys championships will be at St. Andrews College in Aurora on June 5th.

It’s good to note also that lacrosse is growing at the elementary level as well. Last year DEAA hosted it’s first CoEd Lacrosse tournament for kids from grades 3-8 split into two age groups. It was a huge success and there is another set for May 2007.
Hey Tammy! Any info regarding the DEAA lacrosse program would be greatly apppreciated! I had heard that there were some schools involved last year but couldn’t find any reference to it at all! I’d like to have some details well in advance to see if we can try and get our kids school involved this year!
Thanks!

Hey Marty, talk to the schools or go to the Durham District School Board web site (www.durham.edu.on.ca) and follow the links to DEAA. As with all sports, individual schools can decide whether or not they can accomodate offering sports, and if they have teaching staff willing to coach.
DEAA (Durham Elementary Athletic Association) will once again be hosting a coed LAX tournament for our elementary schools in May. There will be two divisions - Junior grades 3-6 and Intermediate Grades 7-8. We will likely run it out of Whitby again. To ensure an equal playing field we have used the whippet stick in the past however we are looking at the possibility of using regular sticks for a separate competitive division this year. If you would like more information contact Rob at Sherwood P.S. in Oshawa. We would even entertain having teams from outside of Durham entering this tournament.
I talked to LOSSA Convenor last night, it was stated to me that Lossa will have two divisions, and it will be based on schools less than 950 (B), Schools more than 950 (A). The change was made to follow in compliance with OFFSA certification.
At least that’s how it was explained to me.
