Corny Derks receives OLA’s “Mr. Lacrosse” award.

Congratulations to Corny Derks, a current Coach in the Whitby Minor Lacrosse Association, who just recently received the “Mr. Lacrosse” award from the Ontario Lacrosse Association.

Corny has coached lacrosse for over 30 years (I think it is 34 or 35) in Whitby.  I know this is somewhat accurate as he was already coaching when I started playing lacrosse at the age of 5.  I am now 38.  He has always had a following of folks that fall into two categories, love ‘em or hate ‘em.  Corny is certainly a guy that will give you his opinion, and won’t candy coat anything; a sort of straight shooter if you will.

While he has his supporters and his doubters, nobody can deny what Corny has done for lacrosse in the past 30 plus years.  He coached prior to the birth of his three sons, coached them all when they played, and is still coaching now that they are grown young men.

On the floor, he recently has won a Bantam Provincial A Championship (in both Box Lacrosse and Field Lacrosse), with a team that went undefeated all season, and in the same summer Coached the Team Ontario Bantams to a National Championship also going undefeated in the tournament.  This past summer he Coached the Dutch National team at the World Field Lacrosse Championships in London.  You might say when he gets involved, he really gets involved.

In a world where many try to find fault with much of what Coaches do year in and year out; I’d suggest you’d struggle to find too many players that have many negative words to say about him as a Coach.  That speaks volumes about any Coach in my opinion.

It is really a good thing to see long time volunteers get recognized for their perseverance and longevity involved in sport.  This award was a long time coming and certainly deserved.
